Anyone using the backported kernels on Lucid? I'm seeing driver problems.

I have been trying the backported Maverick, Natty & Oneiric kernels on Lucid. The snag is that when installing Oneiric (linux-image-generic-lts-backport-oneiric) I see a bunch of errors about certain Realtek drivers not being installed, and when installing the Natty kernel (linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty), I get similar ones about certain graphics drivers:

Running postinst hook script /usr/sbin/update-grub.

Sure enough, the resultant system doesn't run correctly on a PC with an ATI graphics card and is stuck in 800*600.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to resolve this?

I have no help to offer, but I wonder why you don't just run the regular Lucid kernel?

(there's an associated question about why you're not just running the latest version throughout, but then I tend to run linux server, where the whole where-did-Gnome-go question doesn't arise)

I prefer to stick to LTS releases for such things. Simple as that. I do the same on servers, too, & indeed would expect it.

I've hit some problems with the old 2.6.32 kernel. One facet is integral drivers - such as lack of support for some recent Ethernet/wifi chipsets, integrated webcams and so on. Another is problems with power management, the main consequence of which is things like machines that freeze when attempting to shut down, or giving very poor battery life.
